Iowa’s Elkader Care Center is facing a $9,000 fine after a resident’s untreated bed sore led to her death. The woman was admitted to the facility with the sore but was not given an adequate care plan to ensure regular repositioning or proper wound treatment. As a result, the pressure sore worsened significantly within day. Despite emitting a strong odor, however, the staff failed to do further examination or care of the wound. As a result, the bed sore worsened.

Just two weeks after admission, the resident was rushed to the emergency room as her condition deteriorated into sepsis. Three days later, she passed away due to the infection caused by the untreated wound.

What To Do If Faced With a Nursing Home Injury

According to a news article, Elkader Care Center joins other Iowa facilities —including Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, the Rehabilitation Center of Des Moines, and Rose Haven Nursing Home— in facing fines for nursing home negligence. This incident only highlights the need for increased oversight of residents in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
