A woman in a room. Two more Iowa nursing homes have joined the federal government’s list of the nation’s worst care facilities due to critical staffing shortages. These facilities, Bishop Drumm Retirement Center and Griswold Rehabilitation, now face increased oversight after concerning patterns of neglect emerged.

Devastating Consequences of Staff Shortages

At Bishop Drumm, inadequate staffing reportedly led to one resident’s death and another’s hospitalization for septic shock. Staff members revealed they sometimes had just one nurse caring for 30 residents, or two nurses managing 60 residents – far below safe staffing levels. The facility received multiple citations for insufficient staffing throughout 2023.

When Neglect Becomes Systemic

The situation at Griswold Rehabilitation paints an equally troubling picture, with 17 violations discovered during recent inspections. One resident reported waiting four hours in soiled briefs before receiving assistance, while a nurse’s aide admitted to working entirely alone during an inspection.

A recent article reports that these facilities join the 88 nursing homes nationwide designated as Special-Focus Facilities, reflecting the broader crisis in nursing home care.
