Takata airbag recallResponsible for eight deaths and 98 injuries so far, the Takata airbag recall, already the nations most extensive vehicle recall in history, may be expanding to include General Motors and Volkswagen vehicle models in addition to previously recalled vehicles.

Faulty inflators in Takata airbags have caused violent ruptures, firing shrapnel toward drivers and passengers during an accident. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigators have extended their investigation of faulty Takata airbags to include side airbag inflators on certain General Motors and Volkswagen models.

Risk Factors Involved in the Takata Airbag Recall

Though the definite cause behind the exploding airbags has not yet been uncovered, investigators have determined risk factors. They have concluded that climate plays a role in causing the malfunction; vehicles exposed to hot and humid climates for a period of five years or more are at a higher risk for airbag explosions. Side airbags on the passenger side of affected vehicles are 10 times more likely to rupture than driver side airbags.

General Motors Recall

This month, General Motors announced a recall of approximately 400 vehicles in North America equipped with the faulty Takata airbag inflators. General Motors dealers will perform repairs on the recalled vehicles and the manufacturer will supply vehicles on loan to owners during the repair process.

Educating Vehicle Owners

NHTSA investigators are considering initiating a national campaign in conjunction with major automobile manufacturers to educate vehicle owners regarding the necessity of having their affected vehicles repaired. The NHTSA has found that vehicle owners may not be taking the recall seriously. Efforts may also be made by the NHTSA to encourage automakers to extend their efforts to complete the vehicle repairs faster.
