Three Killed by Drunk Driver

Three people were killed early Thursday on Interstate 39-90-94 in Madison when a drunken driver veered off the road and slammed into their disabled car.
The crash happened around 2:40 a.m. on the median shoulder of I-39-90-94, about a mile north of the Highway 151 interchange.
The drunken driver, Bradley R. Erickson, 31, of Madison, was booked into the Dane County Jail at 8:30 p.m. on three tentative charges of homicide by drunken driving, Dane County officials said. Erickson suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
The dead include the driver of the disabled car, a 20-year-old woman from Milwaukee; Wilfredo Ugarte, a 23-year-old man from Puerto Rico and University of Minnesota student; and Marcus Johnson, a 19-year-old man from Milwaukee and University of Minnesota student. Two other people who were in the car were not injured.
According to the State Patrol’s crash report, three people were outside the car changing the flat when the crash occurred. Two men were hit and killed, and the third person jumped over the median and escaped injury. Two people remained in the car and one of them was taken to UW Hospital and died there. The other was uninjured.
