Family of Deceased Resident Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Pleasant Hill Nursing Home

lawsuit documentsNeuang Boun Sisamouth’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Parkridge Specialty Care and Rehabilitation. The lawsuit cites elder abuse and negligence in Sisamouth’s death back in June 2022. Specifically, the suit alleges staff negligence and delayed emergency response in the final hours of Sisamouth’s life.

Sisamouth, a 72-year-old diabetic, was a resident of Parkridge for more than 24 months before she passed away in 2022.

Court documents paint a disturbing timeline of events on the day Sisamouth died. According to the lawsuit, on the morning of her death, a nurse and a nurse aide noticed a significant decline in her condition. Sisamouth’s blood sugar, oxygen and blood pressure levels fell to dangerous levels.

A nurse practitioner documented that the nursing staff told her of Sisamouth’s disturbing vital signs. Sisamouth’s decline allegedly began the day before.

Around 9 a.m., Sisamouth’s condition declined further, prompting the nurse practitioner to do a physical examination at about 10:43 a.m. However, the lawsuit claims the practitioner did not call emergency services and left Sisamouth to deteriorate further.

It is alleged the facility placed a 9-1-1 call during this time, but it was not related to Sisamouth. The call was about the discovery of drug paraphernalia at the nursing home.

The lawsuit says Parkridge staff did not call 9-1-1 for Sisamouth until just after 1 p.m. in the afternoon. They only did so after Sisamouth’s daughter requested it. The nurse practitioner instructed a nurse aide to make the call. Unfortunately, the facility did not contact emergency services until around 2:30. It took another half hour for the ambulance to arrive at Parkridge.

Sisamouth was transported to MercyOne Medical Center. Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals later cited Parkridge for multiple violations, including failing to seek emergency treatment in a reasonable time.

The lawsuit focuses on more than this single incident. While it claims Sisamouth endured extreme pain and emotional distress, the suit also notes Parkridge has a history of violating regulations and receiving poor performance ratings. For example, the lawsuit notes that Parkridge is on a federal watchlist of problematic nursing homes.

The wrongful death lawsuit says the defendants in the case engaged in medical malpractice, elder abuse and negligence.
